With the weather getting colder, our dermatologists in Morristown, NJ are available to offer helpful tips for protecting your skin this winter season. By taking proper care of your skin and transitioning from “summer care” to “winter care,” you can further protect your skin from the damaging effects of the colder months.

- Schedule an appointment with one of our dermatologists in Morristown. While you can go to a drugstore for various products, it may be hard to find an associate who can give the best advice for your skin care regimen. - Don’t forget to moisturize. During the spring and summer months you may have already found the perfect moisturizer for your skin. However, during the fall and winter months, as the weather cools, it is important to change your skin care routine as the weather conditions change. Find a moisturizer that is oil-based, rather than water-based. The oil will help to create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. - Avoid super hot baths. While the idea of soaking in a nice hot bath on a cold winter day may sound relaxing, it can cause your skin to lose its moisture. The intense heat of a hot shower or bath can actually break down the lipid barriers in the skin—leading to a loss in moisture. When showering or bathing, you are better off with warm water, in addition to remaining in the water for a shorter amount of time.
- Protect your hands from harm. The skin on your hands is thinner than most parts of your body. It also contains fewer oil glands, which means it is harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. So, what can you do to protect your hands? When you go outside, wear gloves. And if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, try wearing a thin cotton glove first to avoid irritation from the wool.
- Limit the peels. If your facial skin is uncomfortably dry, it is important to avoid using harsh peels, masks, and alcohol-based toners or astringents. Instead, try to find a cleansing milk or mild foaming cleanser that does not contain alcohol, and masks that are “deeply hydrating,” rather than clay-based, which tends to draw moisture out of the face.
